Attorney Blake Brewer,
Featured speaker at
Southwest Area Bar Association Luncheon

Berea, Ohio – The September 29, 2006, meeting of the Southwest Area Bar Association featured Blake Owen Brewer, attorney at law, as its luncheon speaker.  Mr. Brewer addressed the members on the recent changes in the federal bankruptcy laws.

In his speech, Mr. Brewer advised the crowd that the vast majority of filers are still eligible for legal debt relief through a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, despite the hope of the credit card companies to steer more people into Chapter 13 repayment plans.  The real downside of the new law, Mr. Brewer said, is that attorneys have increased responsibilities and liability, which means increased costs for the filers.

Mr. Brewer reviewed the history of the current legislation and reviewed several cases which have attempted to provide meaning for various provisions in the new bankruptcy laws.

The Southwest Area Bar Association consists mainly of attorneys practicing the areas served by the Berea Municipal Court, including Berea, Brook Park, Middleburg Heights, Olmsted Falls, Olmsted Township, Strongsville, and portions of the Cleveland Metro Parks. The Ohio State Patrol is also represented on the Ohio Turnpike and Interstates 71 and 480 when their citations are written within these areas.
